I tried my second ever Larabar today! It was pecan pie flavor and like the cherry pie flavor, I’ve never actually had a piece of pecan pie. I do love pecans though and this was sweetly pecan-y.
It was a little oily from the nuts, but overall very enjoyable.
I also have a new flavor of tea in my tea rotation. Celestial Seasonings honey vanilla! I was looking to get some new herbal tea so I wouldn’t have to worry about caffeine at night and this looked promising.
While I do like the tea, it’s still nothing compared to my Tazo sweet cinnamon spice. 🙂

I headed to the gym this morning with one of my favorite t-shirts:
I figured it would be appropriate attire with a strength workout planned and all. When I got to the gym I hopped on a treadmill for an easy mile warmup starting out at 6.5mph and finishing up at 8.0mph. It probably sounds strange but I felt so light and quick! Then I did an ab workout followed by pushups, lateral pulldowns, overhead pulls, bicep curls, and a lot of stretching.
Tomorrow starts the shortest month of the year, I can almost smell Spring!
Question: What is one thing you are most looking forward to in the near or distant future?
It is comforting to me to have faith in something greater than us. I don’t necessarily agree with all aspects of organized religion but the code, so to speak, put forth in peaceful religions (such as the 10 commandments in Christianity) is a solid moral basis for human behavior.
After Caity and I took a quick trip to Whole Foods and Starbucks we attended the 5:30 mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. It was beautiful and I have a strong appreciation for the Catholic church. However, I would say that I tend to be more of a spiritual person than a religious person meaning that I have a belief and faith but am not fully committed to every aspect of the teachings of any one church.
Question: Do you consider yourself religious, spiritual, or neither?
I’ve officially made it to the 100th post milestone!
Last night we were going to go see Rocky Horror, which Caity and I had seen in November. But, being the early bird that I am as of lately, and being mildly intimidated by the freezing temperatures, my roommate and I decided to stay in and watch movies. I also figured it would be a good time to get in touch with my creative side. And so, an inspiration/bulletin board was born.
I taped a few pieces of cardboard together to make it thick, covered it with black fabric, and functionally decorated it with ribbon and pushpins. Then I hung the “Emily” snowman ornament my Grandma bought me for Christmas on it! Whenever I find something inspiring, I’ll post it on the board.
For some reason my earlybirdedness refused to kick in last night and by about 1:00am I still wasn’t able to fall asleep. I was becoming increasingly bothered and frustrated and the last time I looked at the clock it was past 2:00. But amazingly, I woke up at my usual time this morning and wasn’t at all tired!
Because the gym doesn’t open until 12:00 on Sundays, I spent my morning in the lounge watching the food network channel. At around 11:00 however, I was jolted from my peaceful engrossment by the obnoxiously loud fire alarm. Although we were all annoyed at having to stand outside, I was thankful I wasn’t the girl with the wet hair in the bathrobe or part of the headachy hungover bunch.
My workout this morning was 40 minutes/4 miles of intervals on the elliptical. I wasn’t really into my workout but it got done. Eats so far today have been an apple, sweet cinnamon spice tea, and Kashi GoLean with almond milk. A giant salad is next on the menu.
Question: If you could magically be a pro at anything, what would it be?
Yesterday was my friend Caity’s birthday and we had a movie night to celebrate! She and the other girls had Italian food delivered from a nearby restaurant complete with some gorgeous slices of cheesecake and tiramisu. I’d already eaten a salad and giant bowl of oatmeal for dinner with some Endangered Species extreme dark chocolate for dessert (thanks Mom!).
We decided on V For Vendetta which I had never seen. I had no idea what it was about but, well, I loved it! If you’re unfamiliar with it, the movie is set in futuristic London under a totalitarian theocratic government. V, the main character, with Evey’s help (played by Natalie Portman), urges the people of Great Britain to take part in a revolution to overthrow the oppressive state.
There were just a few parts that were a little overdramatic for my tastes but overall I’d recommend it!
This morning I woke up a little later than usual, around 9:00, which is okay because the gym doesn’t open until 10:00 on Saturday anyway. I had a 3 mile run planned for today and a 5 mile run planned for tomorrow but for whatever reason I felt like today was the right day for 5 miles. Including my warmup, I was on the treadmill for almost exactly 48:00 minutes meaning my average pace was about 9:36 minutes per mile. That is longest I have ever run on a treadmill… but truth be told, I kind of enjoyed it.
When I got back to my room, I inhaled an apple before hopping in the shower. Now I’m enjoying some Tazo chai tea (my second favorite after sweet cinnamon spice) which will shortly be followed by some Kashi GoLean.
Question: What is you favorite brand/type/flavor of tea?
Believe it or not, up until this point I had never had a larabar. However, when I was at Trader Joe’s last week, I picked a few up. First to be taste tested: Cherry Pie.
I actually had half last night, and the rest after my workout this morning along with a big juicy pear.
As you probably know, the ingredient list is stellar: dates, almonds, unsweetened cherries. The flavor? It’s good. A real slice of cherry pie has never appealed to me so I can’t vouch for it authenticity, but I do love dried cherries (especially covered in dark chocolate) so I definitely enjoyed the taste of that.
Anyway, my workout this morning felt amazing. I ran 3 miles on the treadmill alternating my speed each time the song changed. I kept it between 6.0 and 7.0mph with an incline of 1.0. I don’t know why but it seemed like the time flew by! I followed up with an ab workout and my “feeling amazing” has lasted all day.
After my classes I headed back to my room and relaxed with some miso soup and roasted seaweed.
By the way, I would like to point out that it’s the weekend!
Question: What are your plans for the weekend?
I’ve made it a whole week without sugar! That means no sugar in my morning coffee (I’m a longtime stevia user), no sugar in my cereals (I’ve been eating lots of oatmeal with fruit and Kashi 7 Whole Grain Puffs), and no candy or dark chocolate. What’s the verdict? I don’t feel a whole lot different but then again I wasn’t consuming sugar by the bucketful in the first place. Sugar is part of a healthy diet (in moderation, duh) and I’m happy to reintroduce it into my diet again!
I spent a good chunk of my morning in the laundry room and now have plenty of clean clothes to get me through until I decide it’s time to do laundry again. Just kidding. I really need to do my laundry more often!
My dresser is completely full. I don’t think I could fit anything else into it if my life depended on it.
After putting my clothes away, I did some dorm friendly exercises, wrote some postcards, and set out, braving the mounds of snow, in search of a mailbox.
