Falafel Fix

My workout this morning was a tough 20 minute “random hill” on the elliptical. After that I did an arms workout and a little bit of abs. On my way back from the gym I ducked into the computer lab to tweak one of my papers and print it out for class.

When I got back I had an apple and some Kashi GoLean for breakfast. Shortly thereafter I got ready for class and headed out the door. It was a relief to finally hand in one of my papers and be able to fully focus on my one due tomorrow. Of course after class I headed to my favorite study place, the dining hall. After I had piled my plate high with salad I perused the rest of the options and was happily surprised to see falafel!

I have been craving falafel since I saw this recipe for falafel burgers. I ended up eating four of them because well, why not? Upon returning to my room to finish writing this paper in the comfort of my bed, I’ve been feeding my brain with more veggies and hummus along with some cereal.

Question: Do you have any favorite study snacks?

The Larabar Experience V.

Today has been crammed with paper writing. It wasn’t crammed enough to make me forget about food though! I had an apple this morning before I went to the computer lab. There I typed up my March training schedule (I love being able to cross off completed workouts!) and wrote some emails. After that I headed to the dining hall where I got the majority of my work done as I snacked on copious amounts of fruit, veggies, and cereal.

When I got back to the room I finished up my first paper and continued on with my second one. While working and facebooking, I broke into a Larabar. The first one I tried was the chocolate Jocalat bar and I honestly hated it. So, as much as I hate wasting food, I swallowed my bite and proceeded to toss the rest in the trash can.

Instead I went for the PB&J flavor which did not disappoint! I’ve come to the conclusion that I will stick to the regular Larabar flavors and avoid the Jocalat ones from now on.

Time to get back to this paper and prepare for the busy week ahead!

Become Your Dream

First up, Friday night recap:

Me, Danielle, and some other friends went out and had such an awesome time! 🙂

Early this afternoon Danielle and I headed to Central Park for an eight mile run. I’ll be honest and say it was a tough run for me. I think my long runs are more effective if I’ve taken a full rest day the day before. But we managed to finish in an hour and fifteen minutes, so not too bad. My hips are insanely sore but other than that I’m feeling good!

Somebody wrote “become your dream” with chalk on the pavement multiple times along the east side of the outer loop. Every time I saw it I was re-inspired!

We stopped to grab some fruit and water before hopping on the subway to head back to school. On the way back we were freezing but it’s nothing a hot shower couldn’t fix. 🙂

Question: How is your weekend going, what are you up to, has anything inspired you?

Midterms Already?

My Mom and I were up bright and early this morning. I went to the hotel gym for a 40 minute elliptical workout while she packed. By about 10:00 she was in a Lincoln headed to the airport while I tried to evade the rain, with no success, as I made my way to the subway station. So, au revoir until Spring break (which is soon by the way)!

I had my first midterm exam in State and Local Government which consisted of four essays and my first midterm paper in Philosophy due today. I won’t know how I did on the paper for a while but I know for sure that I did well on the exam! I’m going to have a busy weekend of more paper writing and studying but for now I’m just going to enjoy the fact that it’s Friday!

Question: Are you close with your parents?

Candle 79

I completed a 3.5 mile run plus a strength (arms and abs) workout this morning. When I got back I showered and enjoyed a nice big container of refreshing watermelon. I’ll be back to studying, getting ready for the day, and off to the university shortly but first I’ll backtrack.

Yesterday morning’s run was a 40 minute tempo which ended up being about 4.5 miles. After that I came back to our room, showered, had an apple, and got ready to head over to school for a meeting and study group. Well, the meeting was cancelled and the study group ended up being more like story time so, although it was fun, it was kind of a waste of a trip. Hence the reason I didn’t post last night (I was studying my brains out for a quiz on geography of Europe).

When I got back to the city, my Mom and I met at Lord and Taylor, by far one of our favorite stores. God bless the man who was helping me because I tried on an insane amount of shoes.

I ended up getting these beautiful Michael Kors shoes for an awesome deal!

After we exhausted ourselves with shopping, we headed uptown to my favorite restaurant Candle 79! Because we’ve been going out for the past few nights we decided to eat a little lighter than we have been.

First, we were brought a complimentary appetizer of crostini with hummus, olives, and pineapple. It was an interesting but good flavor combination.

Then we shared probably my favorite thing on the menu, Angel’s Nachos. The menu describes it as: corn chips, cheddar & mozzarella, tomatoes, refried pinto beans, chili-grilled seitan, guacamole, salsa, tofu sour cream, romaine lettuce.

We ordered salads for our entrees, my mom got the stuffed avocado: baby greens, quinoa, butternut squash, cucumber, chickpeas, grape tomatoes, radishes, toasted pumpkin seeds, chipotle-avocado dressing. I tried some and it was awesome!

I ordered the salad special which consisted of baby greens, avocado, fingerling potatoes, eggplant, cauliflower, onions, and sunflower seeds with a chipotle-avocado dressing. Amazing. (Note: The presentation was fabulous but I snapped this photo after I started digging in.)

On the side we ordered the sweet potato fries with a garlic and chive aioli. I highly recommend this!

No meal is complete without dessert, so we ordered coffees and split the cannoli.

Which was clearly camera-shy…

Question: Favorite dessert food?

John’s of 12th Street

I woke up this morning ready for a 4.5 mile run. The hotel’s gym, though small, is pretty nice. There were a few TVs and one was directly in front of me. Reading CNN’s subtitles while running definitely made the 42 minutes fly by!

After I showered, I hung out for a while, watched Regis & Kelly, read blogs, and eventually got ready for the day. I then headed back to the university for my one and only class of the day (my other class got cancelled). After class I went to Starbucks to catch up with a friend before heading back into the city to meet my Mom. We were both starving by about 6:00, so we headed to John’s of 12th Street.

We started with the vegan bruschetta, garlic toast topped with avocado and tomato. So good! I could probably eat this every day and be happy.

My Mom ordered the nonvegan eggplant parmesan which came with a side of spaghetti. I had a nice helping of her spaghetti and it was delish.

I ordered the grilled portobello mushroom with polenta and greens. It was outstanding! Everything was so flavorful. We ended up bringing about half the mushrooms home (only after one of the waiters ran out the door to bring us our forgotten bag, oops!) along with my Mom’s pasta.

When our waiter, Patrick Dempsey (all kidding aside he really looked like McDreamy), offered us the dessert menu we couldn’t resist.

We had unpictured coffees and split the vegan cannoli which almost escaped being photographed.

Along with Lula’s cookies and cream ice cream.

A perfect ending to a fabulous meal!
