To start off, I’m Emily and I’m nineteen years old. I am currently studying Government and Politics in New York City though originally I come from a small rural town upstate. The name extraordinarymoments stems from a quote by Mary Cantwell “I live a life of ordinary days studded with extraordinary moments.” So true to this statement, ExtraordinaryMoments will be an account of my ordinary days along with my sometimes frequent sometimes occasional extraordinary happenings.
In late 2007, I became a vegetarian and about a year later I committed to a fully vegan diet. When making the switch from vegetarian to vegan and giving up much of the processed food I was accustomed to eating, I lost somewhere between 25-30 pounds. It may sound great but I was actually going from an already “healthy” bmi to an “underweight” bmi along with some other issues. I wouldn’t attribute this to my vegan diet but more to my overall “eating too much of the wrong things, not enough of the right things.” By that I mean I could eat apples and lettuce all day but not be getting enough calories or nutrients to sustain a healthy weight. It took a long time but eventually I came to my senses and started eating more nutrient dense foods while also picking up running. For me, training for my first half-marathon was a definite saving grace. I realized that in order to perform, I had to fuel my body in the best possible way and over the past year I’ve come to love life more than I ever thought possible.
To be able to enjoy life, you must love yourself! Self-love is not arrogance nor conceitedness. It is self-respect and confidence. Do what makes you feel good about yourself! As Buddah would say. “you, yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”
